The Gullah Land Crisis refers to the ongoing struggle faced by the Gullah/Geechee people
The Gullah Geechee Corridor, encompassing coastal sea islands from North Carolina to Florida, holds cultural significance as the homeland of the Gullah Geechee people, whose unique culture is at risk of diminishing over time.
Challenges Facing Gullah land Owners
Due to the land’s proximity to the coastline and its composition mainly of sea islands, development, tourism, and financial pressures have caused the Gullah people to lose a significant amount of land.
Raising Taxation
Increased pressure on Gullah communities to sell their land or face rising property taxes and costs of living.
Heir’s Property
Land that is passed down through generations without a clear legal title, often leading to shared ownership among family members and potential challenges in managing or transferring the property.
Development
Rapid development and gentrification of the coastal areas, driven by tourism, real estate, and industrial projects.
Legal Protection
Lack of legal protection for Gullah land rights has made it easier for outside investors and developers to acquire Gullah properties. displacing the Gullah people from their ancestral lands.

The Lowcountry Gullah Foundation
To address the complexities of heirs’ property, the Lowcountry Gullah Foundation’s Historic Gullah Land Preservation Program takes a three-pronged approach. The program’s objective is not to provide a continuous financial crutch but to empower property owners to preserve their generational assets.
The program requires participants to contribute some financial equity toward their tax debt and commit to specific objectives and criteria. Educational support and resources are provided regarding heirs’ property, will drafting, and assistance in establishing clear titles. Furthermore, participants are encouraged to attend a financial preparedness program, which acts as a preventive measure against future financial difficulties.
